Sharepoint 2013 search, not working.  "Sorry, something went wrong" everytime.  Do I have to set it up somehow?

Here is the detail of the error everytime I type anything in the search box on the top right of my homepage.

The search request was unable to connect to the Search Service.

Not only this error, but I have a contact app that is not finding any of the contacts that are listed within it.  Why is this happening? What do I need to look for or start?

Thanks.

Do you have a Search Service Application created and configured with content sources?

Honestly, I thought that the Search bar would just work as soon as I added content to my new site.  I do not have such Application created or configured.  Is there a KB article I can follow to do this?

Thanks

Hi

check these docs about search setup and configure

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg502597.aspx

Don't know exactly what the problem was, but this is how I fixed it.  CA > Manage Web Apps > Highlight Sharepoint - 80 > Service Connections > Checked "Search Service Application" (it was unchecked) > Press ok.

Then Highlight Sharepoint - 80 again > Manage Features > Deactivate then Reactivate Sharepoint Server Site Search. (Not sure if this actually did anything).

Once I did that, my search functionality returned.

I was facing the same issue, I tried solution from Peter Filbin above, it works for my case!
Quoted from Peter Filbin solution above, credit goes to Peter Filbin:
"CA > Manage Web Apps > Highlight Sharepoint - 80 > Service Connections > Checked "Search Service Application" (it was unchecked) > Press ok. "

Thanks, Peter Filbin

Hi Peter,

I have tried it, But did not go well. I am getting

"Sorry, something went wrong"

Only some times. Most probably when result page is loading for first time. ULS log didn't help much.
